ABC presented (or will present. I forget.) a made-for-TV movie about the Avian flu. Great. Lovely. Let's freak out the American public, shall we? Remember when we were flooded with movies about the following:

  • Oh my God, METEORS
  • Watch out for that tornado!
  • EARTHQUAKES!!

Sure. The Avian Flu is serious but my point is that we need to stop letting the media push our buttons about something that is out of our hands. I'm not saying let the disease run rampant, but worry less about it taking over and just work on finding/improving a vaccine for it.

Networks will simply market whatever is topical for ratings. Are they trying to scare people? Maybe. But they know that people will tune in to things that are on people's minds. If they proved that there really were gators living in the sewers of NYC, you can bet there would be a movie about gators in other city sewers on your local station within a month. Not really meant to scare people, but it will get ratings no matter how godawful it is. Now the news trying to scare people, that is a different story.

The trouble is all governments tend to govern by fear. They prey on our fears in order for us to vote them in to sove the problem.
